School Out For Summer
Schools across the area are letting kids out for summer, which makes for a lot of happy kids. However, it also brings new dangers as kids head to swimming pools and increase their activity on outdoor playgrounds and toys like bikes, skateboards and scooters.
Swimming pools, both public and private, are one of the most dangerous places for kids. Pools and any open water such as lakes, ponds, rivers and hot tubs are all places where people can drown. A person can drown in less than an inch of water if they are face down. Swimming pool accidents often involve very serious injuries, including death. Swimmers should be discouraged from doing things that put them at risk for suffering neck injuries and traumatic brain injuries by diving into shallow water. Often when there is an injury or death, the pool owner and operator are not complying with proper codes and regulations designed to protect swimmers. Pools also must properly train and staff lifeguards.
At summer camps, be sure counselors and facilities provide proper supervision and equipment.
