New Epidemic of Distracted Walking
An increasingly common new epidemic is “distracted walking,” and it’s causing accidents and injuries at an alarming rate. According to a study by Injury Facts 2015, distracted walking incidents involving cell phones accounted for more than 11,000 injuries between 2000 and 2011.
While many communities today consider themselves more “walkable” with added paths and traffic-calming measures, pedestrians are still at risk. Malls surrounded by parking lots, few sidewalks, blind intersections and high traffic areas all contribute to pedestrian injuries and fatalities.
“Head up, cell phone down” is the safest way for pedestrians to avoid injury. Walkers should look left, right and then left again before crossing a street. They also should make eye contact with drivers of oncoming vehicles. Pedestrians should not wear headphones while walking. While you cannot prevent every accident from happening, taking these steps can help you avoid a pedestrian accident.
