May 15-21 is National Dog Bite Prevention Week
There are an estimated 70 million dogs in the U.S., with 36.5% of homes having at least one dog. Each year, 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs, and many of them are children. About 20% of those bitten require medical attention. The cost of dog bites include serious injury and even death, as well as medical costs and homeowners’ insurance claims.
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), any dog can bite. The Association has designated the week of May 15-21 as National Dog Bite Prevention Week, which is a time to focus on educating people about preventing dog bites. The Association created a series of educational videos for children featuring Jimmy the Dog to help prevent dog bites. Topics include noises, teasing, eating and lost dogs.
