Bathroom Injuries
One of the most dangerous places in your home is the bathroom. A report by the US Centers for Disease Control described the risks. The study reported that there are more than 21,800,000 (21.8 million) non-fatal injuries per year in the bathroom. That translates into 59,726 injuries per day or about 41 people hurt in the bathroom every minute!
The bathtub or shower was the most dangerous location with 68.3% of the injuries. That was followed by the toilet and then the sink.
The study also reported on what the injured victims were doing before they were hurt. Most were bathing or showering (27½%). The next most common activity was listed as “slipped” (17.3%) followed by “Standing up from, sitting down on, or using the toilet” (14.1%). Getting out of the tub or shower was only 9.8%. The study certainly demonstrates that your bathroom is one of the most dangerous places in your home.
If you or a loved one has been injured in your own bathroom, there may be a cause of action. For example, some tubs and showers fail to meet safety standards. Rugs can be improperly designed or manufactured.
