Turkey Fried
As we approach Thanksgiving, thoughts turn to family, football, and turkey. In 2010, more than 7,110,000,000 pounds of live turkeys were sold. While using the oven to cook those birds is still the leading cooking technique, it has become increasingly popular to use a frier to prepare Thanksgiving turkeys.
There are real risks though. Dropping a 10 – 20 pound turkey into up to 5 gallons of 350 degree oil is often a recipe for disaster. The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) estimates that oil fryer fires result in more than $15 million in property damage each year and hot oil splatter can cause serious burns to an adult or life threatening injuries to a child.
There are many ways to reduce the risk of fire and injury. One of the most basic is to suit up. Wearing protective clothing will greatly reduce the risk of oil splatter injuries. Keeping the frier outside and in an open area is another. Placing the frier on a flat, stable location is a third. Never, ever more a hot turkey frier and always keep children away from them.
While these tips will help reduce risk of injury, these products are very dangerous, even when used correctly. Manufacturers need to do a better job of informing customers and educating them on safe uses.
