Passing a Funeral Procession

Today’s question is “Can I pass a funeral procession?” In Illinois (and most other States), funeral processions are given special privileges. They are allowed to follow the lead car in the procession through neighborhoods, cities and intersections ignoring traffic signals and controls like traffic lights and stop signs. If this were not the case, it would be almost impossible to have a funeral procession at all because the cars could not be kept together.

But what if you come to a funeral procession and want to pass them? Can you do it?

Generally, the answer is no. If a funeral procession passes you, you are to pull over and allow them to pass. If you come up to a procession, you should not pass them. In Illinois it is illegal to do so.
