May 11 to 15 is National Bike to Work Week
May 11-15 is “National Bike to Work Week.” The number of bicyclists is growing rapidly across the country, with the number of bike commuters growing by 62% from 2000 to 2013.
Did you know there is a federal bicycling commuter benefit? The Bicycle Commuter Act puts cyclists on the same footing as people who receive transportation benefits for taking transit, driving (and parking) their cars to and from work. The benefits include an allowance of up to $20 per month that employers may provide as a reimbursement of expenses.
While biking to work has many benefits – built-in exercise, environmental friendliness, saved expense – it also can be very dangerous when drivers don’t follow the rules. Some motorists do not pay attention or are distracted. Consequently, they may not see cyclists. Many bike accidents occur at intersections. Other common accident locations include sidewalks, crosswalks, parks, bike paths and bike lanes. Some drivers also speed, ignore crosswalks, stop signs and traffic signals, and drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs – all behaviors that can cause them to hit cyclists.
